The construction website Stavebnictvi3000.cz reported on the press conference held by ČKAIT on December 6, 2018.. We’d like to emphasize a key excerpt from the discussion among professionals:

During the discussion, both structural engineers emphasized that structural collapses resulting from weakened or gradually corroding steel cables do not provide any advance warning; they occur suddenly and seemingly out of nowhere. Professor Křístek noted, ‘When such incidents occur, structural analysis documentation simply disappears.’

The discussion quickly turned to the quality of the work. Delaying the design or installation of house insulation typically doesn’t lead to immediate consequences and may even be noticeable to a layperson. However, structural failures, like the corrosion of steel cables mentioned earlier, are like hidden time bombs; nobody is aware of their existence, let alone when they might trigger a collapse.

Another participant suggested that structural collapses should be publicized to the general public and should be subject to thorough examination by various professional institutions and experts. This could result in a comprehensive database of incidents and measures to prevent them, similar to the practices in aviation.
